One Hen

Another picture book and another true story. This book shows how a small boy in Ghana changed the lives of his family, village and country by saving up to buy just one chicken. This book explains economics and microfinance (giving little loans to people so they can start businesses) in an interesting way. I felt really happy and hopeful after reading this book.

How I Learned Geography by Uri Shulevitz

Picture books are not just for the youngest readers and this one shows what life would be like if you were a Polish refugee during World War II. It is based on a true story about the author and his family. Instead of bringing home bread to his starving family, Uri’s father brought a huge map. You can imagine how unhappy they were about this at first. This book made me think about how imagination has the power to change our lives.

Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate

This is a beautifully written story about Kek, an African refugee who moves to Minneapolis. He has to adapt to so many new and strange things. Katherine Applegate has written this story like a poem and if you like similes this is the book for you! This is one of the best books I have read this year.
